ASCAP Composer Career Workshop

Responding to the need for 21st century composers to embrace an entrepreneurial approach to their careers, in 2009 Alex joined forces with composers Stephen Paulus and Jennifer Higdon, and attorney and EAM/Schott Music president Jim Kendrick, to co-found a U.S. touring series of music business seminars titled The ASCAP Composer Career Workshops. With the full funding support of ASCAP's CEO John LoFrumento, varying combinations of the group, with Shapiro as the mainstay, conduct four-hour workshops about publishing, copyright, web presence, recording, and many other skills, to help composers at all stages of their careers.

As of November 2013, ten workshops have been presented around the U.S., including:

  • Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA, 2013 (Shapiro)

Yale University, New Haven, CT, 2012 (Shapiro, Paulus, Kendrick)

University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, 2011 (Shapiro, Paulus, Kendrick)

The ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO, Hollywood, CA, 2011 (Shapiro, Paulus, Watters, Kendrick)

Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, 2011 (Shapiro, Paulus)

ASCAP offices, New York, NY, 2011 (Shapiro, Paulus, Kendrick)

The ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO, Hollywood, CA, 2010 (Shapiro, Paulus, Kendrick)

Alex Shapiro and Jim Kendrick continue to offer these workshops in the wake of the tragic 2014 passing of Stephen Paulus, and will be speaking at San Francisco Conservatory of Music in February 2015. If your school or organization is interested in scheduling one, please email Alex.
