PROGRAM NOTE

AIRBORNE was composed as the dramatic opening for a four-movement symphony for winds, percussion, and pre-recorded soundscape titled SUSPENDED. The entire symphony is an emotional, cathartic journey, beginning in absolute rage and chaos before traveling through grief, bleakness, macabre humor, and ultimately optimism.

The fast, short, turbulent passages of AIRBORNE launch and jerk upward, alternating with an insistent theme that marches toward something unknown and ominous. The music is an unrelenting, ever-swirling and disorienting wake-up call. Scream with me.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

The percussionists have significant presence in AIRBORNE. If possible, the timpani and mallet instruments should be located as close to the lip of the stage as possible to be best heard and seen, rather than remain buried in the back row.

Tempo is crucial, intended for a dizzying speed of quarter note = 160 or more. Please do not slow to anything less than quarter note = 155.

WEBHEARSALS

Zoom, Skype, etc. are wonderful tools for affordably bringing Alex into your rehearsal, without having to book a plane flight and hotel! She has a great time coaching students, and the difference between their musicianship at the beginning of the session and by the time it ends, is remarkable.

Alex can tell the band about how the piece was created and engage them in conversation, and even show them how her digital project studio works! It's also easy to arrange to have her say hello to the audience during a concert, via a custom video. Webhearsals connect musicians to the real person-- and the stories-- behind the notes on the music stands.
