{"id":2631,"date":"2012-07-10T11:54:27","date_gmt":"2012-07-10T19:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alexshapiro.org\/blog\/?p=2631"},"modified":"2012-07-10T11:54:27","modified_gmt":"2012-07-10T19:54:27","slug":"whales-and-sails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alexshapiro.org\/blog\/?p=2631","title":{"rendered":"Whales and sails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/whalesandsails.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"384\" alt=\"[IMAGE] whales and sails\" \/><\/p>\n<p><font color=#4F4E81>&#8230;click to listen:<\/font><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/RealAudio\/Archipelago_clip_later2.mp3\" style=\"text-decoration:none\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/Archipelagopg1.html\" style=\"text-decoration:none\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/moregn.jpg\"\/><font color=#4F4E81>&#8230;about the music<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><font color=#346513>Through the archipelago.<\/font><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-count=\"none\" data-via=\"alex_shapiro\">Tweet<\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>These simple photos from a little July 4 jaunt from San Juan to neighboring Lopez Island, tell the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>It was very calm.<\/p>\n<p>Awoke at home to a pod of orcas just past the deck.<br \/>\nHeaded down to the dock.<br \/>\nLoaded the sailboat (quite similar to the one in the above photo) with getaway supplies:<br \/>\ndinghy (in case a getaway was needed),<br \/>\nfreshly grown salad greens,<br \/>\nwild salmon for the boat grill,<br \/>\nred wine,<br \/>\nand Swiss chocolates that came from a real live Swiss friend who visited last week.<br \/>\nOh, and good coffee for the morning, too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/olympicsfromboat.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"[IMAGE] Olympics across the Salish\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Looking west to the Olympics, while sailing south.<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"clear: both;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was very calm.<\/p>\n<p>We glided across the water, sometimes at 4 knots<br \/>\nand more often at less than 1.<br \/>\nMore time to talk to the passing seals or birds.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve always been a <em>stop and smell the kelp<\/em> kind of sailor.<br \/>\nAnd, apparently, a prot\u00c3\u00a9g\u00c3\u00a9 of Dr. Doolittle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/dinghyinbay.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"323\" alt=\"[IMAGE] dinghy\" \/><br \/>\n<em>The dinghy followed like a cute puppy.<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"clear: both;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was very calm.<\/p>\n<p>And as twilight arrived,<br \/>\nit was<br \/>\neven<br \/>\ncalmer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/viewfromport.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"199\" alt=\"[IMAGE] view from port\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Anchored with plenty of room at Fisherman&#8217;s Bay, as seen from a galley port.<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"clear: both;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Until it wasn&#8217;t.<br \/>\nWhen all that calm<br \/>\nwas interrupted with colorful<br \/>\nnoise<br \/>\nreflected brilliantly in the water.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/fireworksonboat.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"618\" alt=\"[IMAGE] fireworks\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"clear: both;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And the next morning?<br \/>\nIt was even calmer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/islandsfromboat.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"[IMAGE] Orcas and Shaw\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Looking east toward Shaw and Orcas islands.<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"clear: both;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So calm, in fact, that we had to do what sailors<br \/>\nhate<br \/>\nto do.<br \/>\nWe turned on the engine.<\/p>\n<p>We must have known there was a party waiting for us back at the house, and didn&#8217;t want to be late:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/whalesandrocks.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" alt=\"[IMAGE] orcas\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"clear: both;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The scene was exactly as it had been left, with the ironic commentary of a little sailboat<br \/>\nreplaced<br \/>\nby a little powerboat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/blogpix\/whalesfromdeck1.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"310\" alt=\"[IMAGE] orcas\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"clear: both;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But only when it comes to photos.
